At BestStart Epsom, we believe that celebrating cultural diversity enriches children’s learning and strengthens our sense of community. Our recent Lunar New Year celebration was a vibrant and meaningful experience, thoughtfully woven into our curriculum to help tamariki explore traditions, creativity and connection.

Throughout the week, our children were immersed in the sights and sounds of Lunar New Year. They listened to traditional music, exploring rhythm and cultural expression through sound. Creative experiences played a big part in the celebration, with tamariki making lion and zodiac horse crafts, designing beautiful lanterns, and experimenting with calligraphy. These hands-on activities supported fine motor development, concentration and early literacy skills, while also introducing children to cultural symbols and storytelling.

Food is an important part of Lunar New Year, and our celebration concluded with tamariki enjoying freshly prepared dumplings together. Sharing kai created a wonderful opportunity for conversation, connection and appreciation of different cultural traditions.

At BestStart Epsom, we intentionally create learning experiences that reflect the diverse backgrounds of our families and the wider community. Celebrations like Lunar New Year help children develop cultural awareness, empathy and a strong sense of belonging. We are proud to offer an environment where every culture is valued, every child is celebrated, and learning is brought to life through meaningful, joyful experiences.
