When we got back to preschool after rāhui-lockdown, it was time to celebrate Te wiki o te reo Māori - Māori language week from the 13th - 19th of September.

In the preschool, we celebrated by using as much te reo Māori as we could. This helped us to learn from each other. We also sung lots of waiata- songs together, read pukapuka- books, we played matching kēmu - games and planned on attending Kōrohi o te pepi (a junior version of kapa haka).

Unfortunately, due to rāhui the concert was canceled. The preschool kaiako decided to support the tamariki to perform for each other at preschool. The children were divided into our tuakana (oldest) tamariki and our teina (younger) tamariki to perform. Although it was different than planned and parents couldn’t come and watch, the children had fun learning the waiata and putting on their outfits. It was awesome to see how our tuakana (older) tamariki helped our teina (younger) tamariki to get dressed in their outfits. Everyone watched, listened and sang along.

Here at BestStart Opihi our philosophy states, children will experience the values and language of New Zealand’s bicultural heritage and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
