Our Matariki Whānau Evening was a special opportunity for tamariki, whānau, and kaiako to come together and celebrate this important time of reflection, connection, and renewal.
The evening was filled with meaningful experiences that honoured the spirit of Matariki while creating lasting memories for our centre community.
In the weeks leading up to the event, each classroom explored the pūrākau of how Māui caught the fish. Tamariki engaged in discussions, storytelling, and creative activities that helped deepen their understanding of this significant Māori legend.
Using a variety of artistic mediums, each classroom created unique pieces of artwork to represent the story. These beautiful creations became part of our storytelling display on the evening, showcasing the children’s creativity, learning, and collaboration. The celebration offered a range of activities for tamariki and their whānau to enjoy together.
Children had a wonderful time participating in storytelling, making wishes and aspirations for the year ahead, singing waiata, and engaging in poi activities. These experiences provided opportunities to learn about Māori culture and traditions while strengthening connections with family and friends. A highlight of the evening was the Matariki disco, which quickly became a favourite among the tamariki.
The excitement and energy on the dance floor brought smiles, laughter, and plenty of movement as children celebrated alongside their peers and whānau. The evening concluded with shared kai, allowing everyone to slow down, connect, and enjoy time together as a community. Sharing food is an important part of bringing people together, and it was wonderful to see families gathering, talking, and reflecting on the significance of Matariki.
Our Matariki celebration was a meaningful way to acknowledge the Māori New Year, celebrate learning, and strengthen the connections that support our tamariki to thrive. It was a memorable evening filled with culture, creativity, fun, and community spirit.
