Matariki is a special time to come together, reflect and celebrate new beginnings.
At BestStart Whangaparāoa, a key part of our philosophy is whanaungatanga - building strong relationships and connections. This was beautifully reflected throughout our Matariki celebrations. We loved sharing this meaningful occasion with our tamariki and whānau and creating opportunities to learn, connect and celebrate together.
Over the past few weeks, our children have been exploring the meaning of Matariki through a range of meaningful experiences. They enthusiastically learned waiata, created beautiful Matariki stars, explored Māori-inspired art and designs and engaged in conversations about the significance of the Māori New Year. These experiences encouraged creativity, cultural understanding and a deeper appreciation of Aotearoa's rich heritage.
Another meaningful part of our celebration was planting seedlings together. As we carefully placed each plant into the earth, we reflected on themes of growth, hope and new beginnings that Matariki represents. It was a wonderful opportunity for our tamariki to work together, creating lasting memories while nurturing both our environment and relationships.
We were also incredibly fortunate to welcome the kapa haka group from Whangaparāoa College, who shared a powerful and inspiring performance with our tamariki and whānau. Their waiata and haka created a memorable experience, strengthening our connection to te ao Māori and adding something truly special to our Matariki celebrations.
To conclude our Matariki learning, we welcomed our whānau into the centre for a special evening together. Sharing kai is an important part of Matariki, and our tamariki took great pride in helping prepare a delicious soup by carefully chopping the vegetables. This hands-on experience gave them a meaningful way to contribute to the celebration while learning about the importance of sharing and working together.
A much-loved highlight of the evening was enjoying our kaiako Whitney's famous fry bread, which, as always was a favourite with tamariki and whānau. Gathering together to share kai created a warm and welcoming atmosphere and provided an opportunity for whānau, tamariki and kaiako to connect and celebrate as a community.

Together, we celebrated the values of Matariki - remembering the past, celebrating the present and looking forward to the future with aroha, connection and a strong sense of community.
We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this special time of year and look forward to continuing to honour and embrace the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand alongside our tamariki and whānau.
