For Matariki this year we chose to celebrate on Friday 2 July – this landed us within the Tangaroa moon phase - a time for prosperity.

We wove as many aspects of Matariki into our curriculum as we could – interweaving kōrero, pūrākau, waiata and mahi toi throughout our day.

We came together as an entire centre, merging all three rooms for a shared kai. This was a beautiful moment to share in together and a lovely opprtunity for conenction and tuakana teina.

We each took turns to come to a special mat time prepped in our sleep room – we hung the ‘sky’ with stars (fairy lights) and had a pretend bon-fire – we shared pūrākau and waiata around the bonfire together.

Over the day we created mahi toi; a large canvas that depicted all 9 stars of Matariki, creating paper lanterns to hang around our room, and a woven kite as a revisiting of the seven sister story we had read together around the bonfire.

And finally, in honour of Tupu-ā-nuku and Tupu-ā-rangi we planted new kai plants in our māra.

What a wonderful day of coming together and learning.
