Wow June has come and gone already, this year is just going so fast. Here in our nursery we've been busy exploring Matariki.

Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster commonly known as Pleiades. During Pipiri (June/July) you will notice Matariki twinkling in the beautiful winter night sky.

Matariki means the eyes of God in te reo. In the Māori creation story, Tāne Mahuta (God of the Forest) separated his parents Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). Tāne’s brother Tawhirimatea (God of the Winds) was so upset by this that he tore his eyes out and threw them into the heavens, creating the nine stars of Matariki.

In our nursery we have been exploring this holiday y creating a range of different starts. From glitter to weaving and roller painting we have created a range of different star displays highlighting Matariki and her 7 sisters. We have also explored waiata such as the macarena, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in English and Māori. We shared an evening kai night with our whanau at the centre watching Ruma Tui perform and eating soup that we made in our classroom.
