To celebrate Māori Language Week, Kaiako in the Kea room extended our daily activities to tie into the theme. Tamariki engaged in colouring Kōwhaiwhai bookmarks and another picture that had many different te reo images with their names. We also engaged in waiata time on the mat, which tamariki absolutely loved!

We sang many songs, counted in te reo and even read through some te reo sing-a-long books. Kaiako played a game with tamariki - "Whakarongo Mai Tamariki Mā". Kaiako also got tamariki quite interested in learning the different parts of our body in te reo by using que cards and showing/pointing to the parts on our bodies. Tamariki especially loved this activity.

Kaiako were glad to see all tamariki open to engaging in these activities and acknowledging the Māori culture. We have noticed how much tamariki thoroughly enjoyed these activities and are going to incorporate them more into our daily activities. We have found that by engaging in activities such as these, we are also ensuring that Māori learners are being supported to achieve educational success as Māori.

It was a really insightful week! To date, it is so rewarding to see tamariki using te reo terms that they have learnt during this time. This shows Kaiako just how much of a positive impact there is by celebrating the language weeks.
