Today we held our Waitangirua Gala Day celebrating some of our local heroes.  Our tamariki had so much fun listening, watching, touching and exploring the different big trucks that came through.  All our heroes came to share what they do and how they keep our community safe.

We had mum Vaitui come in her cultural attire. Vaitui is a Faletua (a minister’s wife) and she shared about her role of looking after children and teaching their community how to look after their spiritual wellbeing, our wairua.  Our wairua is very important as part of our holistic growth and wellbeing mana atua. Thank you Vaitui for visiting us today.

As soon as the big red truck turned up, our children were so excited when our Porirua firemen stepped out in their uniforms.  Our tamariki were wowed as they got to hold the hose and watch the water gush out as others looked on to see how far the water sprayed onto the ground.  Being fire wise means our tamariki know how to get out and stay out.  Lots of our children got to explore the truck and sit in it. And what a dream come true for one child who absolutely is fascinated with fire trucks.  We are grateful to our fire department for being heroes in keeping us safe.

We also had AJ from our Wellington water come through with his white truck.  “Do you know how to play Lego?” AJ asked and the children said yes! “Playing with Lego is just like putting all the pipe parts together.”   We had so many children engaged with AJ as he showed us how water flows through pipes underground and how to check our water gage.  Thanks for looking after our pipes AJ, water is so important for our tinana.

Finally, Jackson with his mad digger arrived and what a treat our tamariki had actively exploring the digger and taking turns sitting, moving the stick, looking at the big bucket and big wheels.  Overall, we had one of the best days celebrating our local heroes.  And of course, our biggest every day heroes are our kaiako (teachers) and team!  Thank you to all our local heroes for coming out and sharing with our children the importance of what you do in keeping our community safe.

We can’t wait for the next one to happen!
