Here at Fairy Springs, we take the opportunity to acknowledge the culture and identity of all our children, through celebrating special events. Today we celebrated Pilipino Day.

We started the day listening to Pilipino music before we joined our teacher Rose in our kai area to help prepare our special lunch. We all contributed to cooking the traditional Pilipino dish Pancit. Of course, we had to remember to use our social competence skills of turn-taking as we each waited for our turn to help. At lunchtime, we were all proud of how helpful we had been and enjoyed eating our delicious lunch. Throughout the day we also learned about the different areas of the Pilipino culture, traditions, language, and customs. For afternoon tea we were treated to Cassava Cake and Banana Spring Rolls.

What a wonderful day we had to celebrate this special event, acknowledging our friend's culture while also learning to understand and develop cultural awareness through appreciating other cultures. We can also link our day to our own Centre Priorities that are important to us here in the Centre. Whanaungatanga - through connecting links with family and the wider world are affirmed and extended, and understanding that we all have a place within our Centre.

Culture and Identity - we are all affirmed as individuals, and experience the stories and symbols of both our own culture and those of others. Social and Emotional Competency - we are encouraged to learn with and alongside others and understand the expectations of acceptable behavior as we do so. Thank you, Rose, for sharing this valuable learning experience with us, we all enjoyed experiencing and participating in the day.
