At BestStart Balclutha, Pink Shirt Day is a special opportunity for our tamariki and kaiako to come together in a shared commitment to kindness, inclusion, and respect.

Dressed in shades of pink, our centre was filled with a sense of unity and purpose as we explored the important message behind this day - standing against bullying and supporting one another.

Throughout the day, we engaged in meaningful conversations about what it means to be a good friend. Our tamariki shared their ideas about kindness, helping hands, and how their words and actions can affect others.

These experiences strongly link to our centre priorities of social competence, emotional competence, and self-regulation, which underpin all that we do. Social competence was evident as children practiced working together, taking turns, and including everyone in play. We saw many beautiful moments where tamariki invited others to join in, demonstrating empathy and cooperation.

Pink Shirt Day provided an authentic context for building these essential social skills. We also focused on emotional competence, supporting children to recognise and express their feelings. Through stories, group discussions, and role-play, tamariki explored how it feels to be left out or hurt, and what they can do to support someone who might be experiencing those emotions.

This helped strengthen their understanding of compassion and emotional awareness. Developing self-regulation was another key aspect of our day. Tamariki were encouraged to pause, think, and make positive choices in their interactions. Whether it was managing frustration or choosing kind words, children practiced strategies to regulate their behaviour in a supportive environment.

Pink Shirt Day at BestStart Balclutha was more than just wearing pink, it was about building a culture of kindness and respect that continues every day. By nurturing social and emotional skills, we are helping our tamariki grow into confident, caring individuals who stand up for themselves and others.
