Celebrating Samoan Language Week
From May 28th to June 3rd 2023, Best-Start Waitangirua celebrated Samoan language week, through learning stories, flag raising, dramatic play, understanding Samoan culture and values, artifact and patterns.
We were invited by Tairangi primary school to experience Samoan culture. Where our tamariki enjoyed the walk, dance, music and performance. Our children also performed their song and dance, to which was a fantastic experience for our teachers and tamariki.
We had also had our 'Talanoa Fono evening' a time to discuss with our Pasifika aiga and teachers to work in partnership in supporting thier child's culture, language and identity. To end this week off, we had a dress up, made some delicious meaai (Samoan food), siva Samoa with the children, had a march around the outdoor space, with mini Samoan flags.
The children here at BestStart Waitangirua get to experience different cultures within our centre, and parents are happy to hear when their child comes home sharing what they've learnt, through stories, materials, food, song, art including whanau engagement.
