Celebrating Samoan language week

Here at BestStart Oamaru Kindy we have been celebrating Samoan language week through a range of experiences.

On Friday the tamariki and kaiako worked together to create their own Samoan siapo (tapa cloth). Although siapo is usually made using the bark from trees and decorated using natural dyes we used a table cloth and some fabric paints. The children took turns choosing which colour and pattern they would like to print onto the cloth and then used a sponge to transfer the paint onto the fabric. Printing using a pattern and sponge was a new way of creating art for us and it helped us learn more about another culture.

The tamariki were so proud of their art that they often returned to show their friends and families which part of the pattern they made.
