What a beautiful week of celebration, connection and learning we have shared at BestStart St Lukes as we celebrated Tongan Language Week – Uike Lea Faka-Tonga.
Our centre was filled with the warmth and vibrancy of Tongan culture as our tamariki and kaiako explored the Tongan language, music, movement, art, traditional clothing and cultural experiences.
We introduced simple Tongan words and phrases such as Mālō e lelei (hello), Mālō (thank you), Fakamolemole (please) and Nofo ā (goodbye), encouraging tamariki to use these throughout their day.
A special highlight was our Tongan-inspired sensory table, where children explored natural and cultural resources such as coconut shells, pine cones, woven baskets, leaves and natural fibres. Through touching, feeling, smelling and investigating these materials, tamariki experienced culture through their senses while developing curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Tamariki also used recycled materials to create their own Tongan-inspired traditional outfits, learning about the taʻovala and kiekie. They transformed everyday materials into creative interpretations of these beautiful garments, encouraging imagination, creativity, fine motor skills and cultural appreciation.
Music, movement, storytelling and language experiences provided further opportunities for tamariki to connect, communicate and celebrate together.
Our celebrations connected beautifully with Tapasā and Te Whāriki, particularly Belonging | Mana Whenua and Communication | Mana Reo, as children experienced a learning environment where culture, language and identity are respected, valued and celebrated.
A heartfelt mālō ‘aupito to our tamariki, whānau and kaiako for making this week so special. Together, we celebrated the beauty of language, culture, creativity and community.
