Celebration of Cultures
We recognize that our Kindy like most early childhood centres in Aotearoa New Zealand today, reflects how rich in cultural diversity our community is. We recognize that our tamariki are unique individuals whose socio-cultural backgrounds are a valuable source of learning. Celebrating our tamariki, whanau, kaiako and community strengthens our whanaungatanga and is important as culture is not defined as nationality or race but by a shared system of understanding, such as values, beliefs and knowledge (Lee and Johnson, 2007).
At Portage Road Kindy we honour and celebrate our whānau. This week was Samoan Language week, and we were proud to provide a learning program that acknowledged the language, cultural artifacts, music, kai and a beautiful performance by one of our aiga. Such celebrations are important as they provide a sense of belonging for tamariki and supports them to grow up strong in language, culture, and identity.
