Celebrations and Learning in May!
Children are curious about the change in weather and are exploring their environment to learn about why the leaves are changing its colour from green to yellow and then to brown. They are gaining more knowledge about the living world by our weekly visits to The Stadium Teaching Garden and growing their vegetable garden. Children are also collecting leaves and natural resources around the playground area, exploring while doing collage work, identifying the shapes and colours, sorting, and grouping it and exploring through sand play, water play and around family area and through other intentional experiences. Such experiences are engaging children into extend their knowledge about the importance about natural resources around us and how we can use it effectively in our children’s play and exploration.
Our tamariki have being involved in many celebrations at the centre. We had an awesome time interacting with our lovely mums during Mother’s Day and appreciate the important role they play as their child’s first teachers. We also engaged children to explore Maori language which has being supporting us to create a bicultural platform for our young ones. Children learnt through songs and dance moves which supported them to repeat the words and learn further through actions. Children were happy and proud to prepare cookies, card and flowers for their mums. They participated in creating heart shape DIY project as a special gift for their mums with support from Bunnings Warehouse team. These experiences enabled children to explore, think creatively, discover, and make sense of their physical and natural world while developing learning to hammer nails on the board and use springs to make a heart pattern. They also developed skills such as confidence, cooperation, expressing their feelings and problem solving. These opportunities gave children a sense of belonging while watching their mums being welcomed and appreciated to their rooms by their teachers and thus build a strong relationship between our children and teachers.
Children also learnt about why we celebrate Eid. They explored different art and craft work to learn about the significance of stars and moon during Eid celebration. Children were fascinated about sharing their cultural dress-up which make them understand the essence of cultural identity through their dress-up codes. Henna artwork was also a highlight during the celebration as different patterns of henna was created as well as children were able recognise the change in colour while applying the henna and after washing it off with water. This experience provided children a working theory of natural resources when applied to our hand.
