Challenging our motor skills

The tamariki and kaiako have recently challenged their physical skills at BestStart Opihi through skipping.

Skipping has become an interest of our three and four-year-old tamariki. They have been using focus and repetition to learn how to skip, alongside role modelling from kaiako.

Skipping is a fun and challenging activity that requires coordination, gross motor skills, and the ability to time different movements in the correct sequence.

Skipping rope builds strong bones, develops muscle endurance and promotes healthy hearts. It is a great physical challenge that supports our Healthy Heart learning journey.

Social and cooperative skills have been incorporated by using the skipping rope lengthways for rhythmic group games. Here the group works as one/ mahi tahi to ensure the skipping rope rotates at the right speed.

The tamariki have been on individual journeys during solo skipping and learning that practice and determination are key to learning a new skill.

We are excited to continue our skipping journey at BestStart Opihi and plan to revisit this new learning regularly.
