For the past couple of months in the Kahu room at BestStart Burnside, we have been focusing on physical activity and being confident when moving our bodies. This has been a great learning goal for our tamariki and we have noticed that a lot of the tamariki are really good at making big movements but often struggle when it comes to slowing down and challenging themselves to move slowly and precisely. In order to combat this, here in our classroom we decided to set up an awesome provocation to not only get children's bodies moving but also their imaginations.

Our head teacher, kaiako Edward, set up an awesome obstacle course to challenge the tamariki to channel their inner spy. We set up a laser beam course for the children to try and navigate through, and if the lasers were ever touched the children were told they had been caught! This experience led to lots of laughs, smiles, falls, tears (which lead to some wonderful emotional regulation), and learning. The children learnt they had to take their time and challenge their bodies to move slowly through the course which challenged their balance, timing, gross motor skills, and most of all - their patience. Using simple resources such as a fence, climbing frames, chairs, and string, you too can challenge the little spies in your class or home!
