Happy Chinese New Year! This is the year of the rabbit. Rabbits are earnest with everything they do; they just ask that others treat them the same way.

In Chinese culture, rabbits represent the moon. Some say it is because the shadows of the moon resemble a rabbit. Others say it is because of the rabbit’s pure characteristics.

To outsiders, the Rabbit’s kindness may make them seem soft and weak. In truth, the Rabbit’s quiet personality hides their confidence and strength. They are steadily moving towards their goal, no matter what negativity the others give them.

Traditionally we get together for family reunion dinners, we gift red pockets with a gold coin and firecrackers for celebrating the Chinese New Year. At BestStart Delta Avenue we shared this tradition by spring cleaning the centre, paper cutting activities, inviting whanau who shared the experience with us.

We set up activities for whanau to engage with their children such as paper cutting traditional writing of the spring couplet, gifting red envelopes with a gold coin and red packet and firecrackers. We also explained the meaning of the activities and talked about the legend of the Chinese New Year. Our whanau and tamariki enjoyed the activities and learnt more Chinese culture. We shared dumplings and offered Chinese fortune cookies to our whanau and tamariki, and wished each other good luck in the new year. Children were also role modelled to on how to say happy new year in Chinese.
