At BestStart Melling we celebrated Chinese New Year. This year it was the year of the dragon.

The children and teachers invited the parents and grandparents for a feast and to learn about the Chinese culture. Each room had a special activity prepared for the parents to participate in. We had lantern making, messy play, fan making, making dragons and even a dragon puzzle. The children were very eager to show their whanau the dragon dance. The drums began and the dressed up dragon came along as everyone cheered. It was great to see the children created a dragon out of cardboard to use for the dragon dance.

Having cultural celebrations is a wonderful time not to only learn about different cultures and traditions but to get together and interact with one another. At BestStart Melling we believe having cultural events is a way to strengthen bonds and relationships within each family member at the centre (parents, whanau and the children). It was great to see such a wonderful turn out and to see an environment full of joy and laughter.

Happy Chinese New year to all!
