This month we celebrated the Chinese New Year 2021, the year of Ox at BestStart Meadowbank. We gave our children experiences to explore Chinese art art  such as making lanterns and Ox, red envelopes, and dragons. During hui time our children listened to stories about Chinese New Year and the zodiac. We taught our children to sing a Chinese song (Happy New Year) and they enjoyed the dragon dance too. Guanhong’s and William’s mums came to make dumplings along with the tamariki and we enjoyed having them for our lunch. We look forward to next year’s celebrations now.

The children got to explore some of the values, traditions, and beliefs of Chinese culture. Through dumpling making the children explore how to fuel their bodies with healthy food and learn hygienic preparation skills. The visual art and waiata and dance that we did might have supported the children in their developing  their aesthetic awareness and appreciation both visually and auditory. Te whariki, our early childhood curriculum tells us that with guidance and encouragement, children become increasingly capable of making connections between people, places and things in their world and enjoying hearing stories and retelling and creating them.
