Children celebrating Chinese New Year bring the festival to life through colour, joy, and meaningful cultural traditions.

Tamariki came dressed in bright red clothing that symbolises luck, happiness, and protection, and they eagerly participated in the festivities with excitement and curiosity. One of the most special moments for them was the exchange of ang pao (red envelopes), where they learned that these gifts are more than just money — they carry heartfelt wishes for prosperity, good health, and success in the coming year.

As part of the celebration, children were also introduced to the significance of oranges and mandarins. These fruits were shared and displayed as symbols of wealth, abundance, and good fortune. Through hands-on experiences like giving and receiving, tasting traditional foods, and engaging in cultural storytelling, children began to develop an understanding of the deeper meanings behind these practices.

This celebration not only created joyful memories but also nurtured respect for cultural diversity amongst our community. It encouraged children to appreciate traditions different from their own while recognising shared values of kindness, hope, and togetherness.

In doing so, they built meaningful connections to a rich cultural heritage filled with positivity and renewal, strengthening their sense of belonging and global awareness.
