Today the children decided to do some beautiful collaborative art for Waitangi Day. The children chose three symbols which represents them as a whole.

While choosing the symbols they even decided what colours they will use for each symbol.

The children have worked together as a team through meaningful discussions on what matters to them and how we can represent ourselves through these three symbols.

The three symbols which we have chosen are:

Manaia - means containing mana (prestige and power).  Head of the bird, body of human and tail of fish. Representing sky, earth, sea. It is a guardian.

Koru - spiral- symbolises growth, Harmoney and new beginnings (just like the new settlers and Māori coming together as one.

Tiki - represents the human form and ones ancestors. Links past, present and future. How can we continue to honour the Treaty of Waitangi?

Collaborative art is a great way to get all children involved and learn new are techniques. During this activity children are learning how to use PVA glue and cellophane to create a different texture and art piece. While using PVA glue the children have been using their problem-solving skills to see how much glue they need for each cellophane piece.

Children have been given the opportunity to work as a team and to have meaningful discussions has they are working to create a master piece.
