Colour Mixing Fun

This morning in Rūma Kea we had some fun with dye and pipettes. The purpose of this activity was to assist the tamariki with their fine motor skills, which helps with their pincer grip. They also needed to work out how to use the pipettes, to get the coloured dye into it. This activity also produced a lot of discussion around what happens when you mixed the colours together.

When tamariki mix colours they are learning to recognise and name the primary and secondary colours. Colour mixing aids creativity by tamariki exploring and experimenting with different colours in order to create a new one. Most importantly they come up with interesting colours for their artwork. It also helps with their observational and concentration skills by watching the changes of the colours.

With fun activities like this, it also develops dispositions for learning such as curiosity, creativity, enthusiasm, persistence and imagination. Activities like this assist our 'Be School Ready Programme' by subtly engaging tamarikis learning in so many ways but most importantly it's fun so that they begin to develop attitudes and expectations that will continue to influence their learning throughout life.
