Here at BestStart Kelvin Street, peita me te tuhi| painting and drawing is an everyday staple for our tamariki| children's learning and development. Our kaiako/teachers are always finding different, exciting art experiences that support the interests of our tamariki and make connections with the world around them. Painting and drawing provides tamariki the freedom to be creative and expressive using a wide range of materials and modes.

Our pēpē love fun sensory art experiences where they can explore textures and learn about what their tinana| body can do. The kaiako| teachers extend on it by feeding in descriptive language to support the pēpē develop understandings of ideas, colours and math concepts. Trying new modes of painting, such as puff painting, drawing with sand and balloon paint is always a favourite with our toddlers as they love to experiment and make new discoveries and use their imagination.

Painting and drawing is also a fun, relaxing way to develop early literacy as they strengthen small hand and finger musles and motor skills needed for writing. In the older age group painting and drawing provides opportunities for prosocial skill of turn taking and collaboration and sharing their knowledge and skills with others. They are also developing ways to express their feelings, as they understand their ideas can be expressed through art.
