Coloured fizzy eggs
Here in the Prep School we have been doing lots of different activities to celebrate Easter! As well as Easter our tamariki really enjoy science experiments so we set up this activity called “coloured fizzy eggs” to link the two.
We had little plastic eggs that we pulled apart and put into an egg tray before filling them with baking soda. We then added a small amount of dye to vinegar and gave this to the tamariki with some eye droppers and talked about how we would squirt the coloured vinegar into the baking soda and watch what happens! Ngā tamariki quickly began squirting the vinegar into the baking soda and said “wow! It’s bubbling!” This was a great activity and many tamariki were focused right until the vinegar was all gone and the baking soda was no longer reacting to it.
As well as developing our tamariki’s science knowledge and their knowledge of the world around us (both by seeing the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar as well as seeing how the different colours mix together to create new colours), this activity helped to develop their pincer grip and fine motor skills as they squeezed the eye droppers, as well as hand-eye coordination as they carefully made sure that the vinegar was being squeezed into the eggs.
Relationships and their ability to work alongside others were also being developed during this social activity!
