At the children's preschool, our Akonga has had a wonderful opportunity with the NZ police coming into the classroom. Thanks to our family members who serve our local community on the police force.

They introduced us all to a police dog and talked the children about the special role they play and not just being able to get the "bad guys" but how they have amazing noses which help them to find missing people and support the police handler to keep areas safe. When they are not working they learned about how they stay with the police handlers family.

Our children enjoyed looking at all the equipment and asked a lot of questions, especially about the police dogs. The police also had conversations with tamariki about calling them when they needed help and what numbers to use on the phone and what to do if they were lost in the plaza or the supermarket.

This information was very helpful to the children knowing that the police are fantastic community helpers who enjoy children coming over to say hello when they see a policeman or woman out in the community.
