At BestStart Abacus we love to play and explore with water! We have a rainwater tank that the Tamariki can access. Today they used the handle of the bucket to keep the bucket securely in place whilst it filled up with water. They then placed a slightly lower bucket underneath. The tamariki realised that when the larger bucket had filled up with water, the water then began to flow into the lower bucket. The way the water flowed downwards reminded the tamariki of the Huka Falls here in Taupo! At Abacus we value and incorporate our localised curriculum into all areas of play. This provides many meaningful learning opportunities that grow tamariki knowledge around where they live. Its lovely to now see our tamariki including this into their own play and developing working theories inspired by our localised curriculum.

Kaiako then challenged the tamariki to see if they could make the waterfall flow for longer. This took some trial and error as the tamariki added more buckets to see if that would help the water to flow for longer. The tamariki discovered that the buckets had to be lower than the one before, otherwise the water flow would stop! We had so much fun problem solving and making sense of what was happening.
