At BestStart Oamaru Kindy we love exploration in the sandpit, one of our favourite things to do is work together to make the biggest volcano we can by digging and piling the sand up. With all hands on deck the job is soon done and we wait eagerly for the eruption as we mix together baking soda and vinegar to make a chemical reaction!

Recently the tamariki’s learning was extending through a long-term project of building a volcano using a paper mache technique. This had been an exciting project that many different tamariki have taken part in over the course of a few weeks. We made it by building up layers of paper and glue to make it really strong. The tamariki showed great perseverance and patience as we had to wait for the layers to dry. We are now at the stage where we are ready to apply the final waterproof layer and are looking forward to making it erupt for the first time!

At BestStart Oamaru Kindy the tamariki are encouraged to follow their interests such as creating their volcano through a variety of ways, by combining science, sustainable practices and art, they can use different mediums to express their creativity and represent their ideas.
