Being creative can occur across many mediums and in many ways.  One of these ways is using magnetic pieces to tell at story.  At BestStart Doncaster Kindy we have the Goldilocks and the Three Bears Story in book form and also in magnetic form.  As one of the Kaiako was reading the book, the children were finding the matching pieces and putting them on the whiteboard – telling the story using pictures.  They all took turns to find the piece they wanted and add it to the board, displaying their awesome social skills.    We left the magnetic pieces out for the tamariki when the story was finished and they continued to play with them throughout the day.

Tamariki at Doncaster Kindy love portraying their creative side using art.  Today they used collage to express themselves.  More social skills were being used as they took turns to use the glue, played nicely with and alongside each other and communicated.  Fine motor skills were being developed and used as they held the paint brush and when they picked up the different collage pieces to apply to their glue.  Once finished we had some beautiful art creations to display at Kindy.

Both of these activities are what we call open ended – this means that there is no set way they can be used and children can choose what happens.  Yes the magnetics do tell a story, but when the tamariki were using them later on they were making up their own stories, using their minds and being creative.  Creativity is awesome – it shows us what children are thinking and feeling and can be a means of communication.  Ka pai to mahi – Great work tamariki ma.
