Cultural Celebrations
The month of May has been filled with fun learning and celebrations. Our team are lucky enough to have a cultural mentor join our team and support us to celebrate the 9 pasifika language week celerations throughout the year by, researching, networking, implementing and sharing her findings with the kaiako and tamariki. This month we celebrated Rotuman language week and Samoan language week. We started our celebrations by raising the nations flag as we sing along to their national anthem. Our kaiako and tamariki got creative as we learnt about different patterns and designs that are significant to Rotuma and Samoa and are used in clothing, art and body art (tattoos). We were joined by members of the community who showcased a siva Samoa (Samoan dance) and another showed us how to make traditional foods. We made Koko Aleisa(coco rice) and Fa'apapa (coconut bread) which both are an acquired taste but some of the tamariki seemed to enjoy. At the end of our Samaon language week celebration we were invited to join Tairangi school for their Samoan concert. Some of our tamariki walked to the school and performed the song 'Le Aute' in front of the whole school, they were amazing! and what an amazing month of discovery. We look forward to celebrating the upcoming pasifika language celebrations, next up is Kiribati language week.
