Cultural Day in the Paua Room
To value identity means to value culture. We recently celebrated Cultural Dress up day here in the Paua room. As a multicultural centre, we love acknowledging and learning about different cultural attires, values, and beliefs. Building and maintaining a sense of belonging is important for our tamariki, whanau, teachers, and community. Our tamariki expressing aroha through cultural values and being proud of their identity is encouraged.
Providing a safe space where children learn about cultural awareness and supporting appropriate materials where tamariki explore and learn from and alongside one another. Pretend play and conversations around the playground about dressing a certain way and help teachers and peers understand how and when cultural attire is worn at home. Our tamariki know they have a place where they can share, express and relate with each other.
They are also learning about body awareness, movement, and space. Enriching culture within our environment has become a strong point for our centre. Weaving and passing down knowledge through whanau interactions, teachers as well as children. This has also been a great way to build, support and maintain whanua relationships which has a better outcome for learning development of our tamariki here at Best Start Onehunga.
