At BestStart Dixon heights we celebrated Diwali the festival of lights on the 21st of October. Our centre believes in acknowledging and respecting the cultural diversity of each and every child in our centre. We have children from Indian cultural backgrounds and Diwali is the most important festival in the Hindu culture. We provided a variety of experiences to our tamariki on this day such as drawing henna on their hand, dressing up in their cultural attire, dancing to Diwali songs and making Diya. We also invited our parents to share their experiences with our tamariki.

Children coming from a Hindu background had the opportunity to share their culture with everyone. Tamariki from other cultural backgrounds learns and experience different cultures and celebrations. Our centre philosophy also supports our tamariki to be able to express and learn in the knowledge that their learning is important and valued. Tamariki knows they have a place and their culture is seen as taonga.
