Cyclone Gabrielle
What an amazing effort put in from all our tamariki, kaiako, whānau, and local community to support our centre to fundraise for those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Due to this affecting so many of us in a personal way, as a team we quickly got to work and asked the tamariki how they felt we could best raise funds. As you can imagine, a lot of ideas were put forward so we took a vote. The top three were: a cake stall, selling one of our toys from home, or a disco and fruit sale.
This presented such an amazing learning opportunity for our tamariki as they learnt all about the devastation and science behind this weather event. They quickly got to work creating signs, working on pre-writing skills, pre-maths skills, running the stalls, counting money (and giving change!!), and lots of other school-ready skills such as social competence and independence. Above all, the tamariki had so much fun whilst engaging in these activities. The total amount that the tamariki thought we would raise would be $300… Well, our final count was $774! What a great effort made by all, our next exciting adventure is donating this to the Red Cross to support others in need
