The tamariki were involved in experimenting with Dancing Milk. The children sat down at the table and made a prediction on what is going to happen. A number of children mentioned that the milk was going to explode. The children all had a chance to sniff the dark blue milk before pouring it into the large container. Next it was time to drop in the pink and green food colouring. Lastly, it was time to add a splash of dishwashing liquid. The children seen the colours in the milk dance around. The children were all so excited!

The science: Milk is made up of mostly water but it does contain vitamins, minerals, proteins and fat. The fat and proteins are super sensitive to changes in the milk and so when the dishwashing liquid is added a chemical reaction occurs. The soap and fat work hard to join together, which causes the movement. When food colouring is added we are able to witness this chemical reaction occurring.
