BestStart Somerfield Kindy celebrated Chinese New Year with Cathy (Juliette’s Mummy). Cathy taught us how to make the most delicious dumplings. First we cut the cabbage and ate 'cabbage noodles' while Cathy continued to cut the cabbage into really small bits. The tamariki thought it tasted great. Cathy showed all of the tamariki the ingredients which were going to be added and talked them through the process. Cathy continued to smell the mixture throughout the process and added ingredients as needed.

When it was time to make the dumplings, Kaiako Kirstie had three sets of little devices which helped to form the shape of the dumpling. First we put it onto the device, scooped in the mixture and then dipped our finger in the little bowl of water nearby then ran our fingers around the outside of the dumpling wrapper. This helped bind the two sides together.

As time went on the tamariki were getting faster and faster and then didn't need the devices at all, they were able to do it by hand! How clever.

We took a little break half way through cooking. Cathy told us about her culture and what she does on Chinese New Years Eve. She eats special foods, like whole fried fish, rice and noodles. The pictures she showed us looked so good. To say thank you to Cathy, we have learnt how to sing ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ in Mandarin. The tamariki all did so well to learn the song in such a short time.
