developing our relationship skills

Over the last month the ruma Ōtākaro tamariki have had a big focus on developing our relationship skills.  With this in mind our kaiako have provided and helped facilitate a range of activities that allow our tamariki to explore the different aspects of developing and maintaining relationships.  These skills include turn taking, space sharing and communication.

Through art and building our tamariki have been able to use trial and error to figure out and learn what communication techniques are most effective in getting their desired result.  The art experiences also allowed our children to express themselves and discuss among themselves what they had drawn and talk about what their peers had created.  This gave our tamariki another outlet for communicating and allows them to decide which works best for them.

Once our tamariki had established some communication skills they were able to use these skills to develop confidence in the skill of space sharing and turn taking.  Through play and watching those around them all of our tamariki involved were able to build up their confidence as they observed what worked for the above skills and what did not - for example yelling a lot of our tamariki discovered was less effective than nicely asking for a turn.
