Dinosaur Castle

We set up a window display to gauge the interest in dinosaurs and to see if it would encourage children to revisit their previous learning experiences through playing with magnets and dinosaurs. As a teaching team, we have a current Project Planning Room in the Young Children's Centre, honing in on current observations and play patterns of children.

Construction and Connection (Hanganga/Hononga) have been the focus for this planning as the team has noticed how construction and connection have been used in so many different ways and with so many different resources! We have documented this learning in play with the use of paper, pipes, playdough and clay, Mobilo, beads, lego/duplo, loose parts, magnets and so much more but most of all - imagination and creativity!

The children were very imaginative in their play with the dinosaurs and magnets as they began to tell their own stories. I began to record their voice to record their story. As the children played and created their story with resources they used a range of different communication and problem-solving skills to keep the play alive. The narrative characteristic of documentation is about acknowledging the important role that personal, written, oral, and digital stories play in the learning experiences and outcomes of children.
