Dinosaur discovery at Stoddard

Dinosaurs are a popular topic currently for our Rua room children. These incredible creatures spark children’s imagination and curiosity, and they offer endless learning opportunities. This program provided children the opportunity to explore their own interests.

Children discovered more about dinosaurs through storytelling and hands-on exploration of replica bones.

Learning Outcomes for tamariki:

  • Explore, ask questions, and create their own working theories in relation to dinosaurs.
  • Understand that palaeontologists learn about dinosaurs by studying fossils.
  • Handle and make comparisons between a range of dinosaur fossil bone replica, large and small.
  • Recognize the difference between the teeth of dinosaurs that ate plants and those that ate meat.
  • Understand the principle of ‘mauri’ and explore the concept and practices of ‘kaitiakitanga’.
  • Learn the whakapapa of various fossils found across Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa to make connections to their own past.
