Lately it’s been dinosaur madness! Our tamariki have loved playing dinosaurs recently, inspired by a few new toy dinosaurs that we got. We were pretending to be dinosaurs and reading books about them, so we planned a few experiences to encourage this learning. We have a beautiful set of dinosaur bones that we hid in some trays of sand for us to find. We loved carefully brushing the sand away, learning about what a ‘palaeontologist’ does and role-playing together.

Now that we are back from level 4 lockdown, we have been using provocations to inspire children’s learning. Provocations are thoughtfully planned experiences kaiako set up for tamariki to interact with. They are open-ended with no prescribed outcome, but are designed to stimulate ideas, imagination, creativity, and thinking. Provocations are a great way of using the environment as the third teacher, using the arrangement of space around us to invite tamariki to come and interact, play and learn. Our tamariki have loved our dinosaur themed provocations!
