Diwali holds a special place in our hearts here at BestStart Wolverton. It is a beautiful opportunity for our tamariki, Kaiako, and whanau to come together and learn more about the cultures that are a part of our learning and local community.

Acknowledging Diwali for us is about providing meaningful experiences and traditions that fill our tamariki with cherished memories and authentic sensory experiences that build on our young tamariki and whanau’s understanding of valued family and cultural traditions.

Rangoli and Mehndi experiences are an important custom that tamariki and Kaiako bring with them from their family to ours here at BestStart Wolverton, especially during this festival as it signifies good luck and happiness. Offering opportunities for tamariki and Kaiako to learn about and experience Mehndi was important for us as we looked at traditional patterns and design. Kaiako supported tamariki to explore real life values through stories and mythology focused around Rama and Sita, vanquishing bad and welcoming good into our lives. Creating Diya was also a significant experience for our tamariki, as they learnt about the lighting of the diya to welcome positive energy and good for the year to come.

We cherish our differences and empower our tamariki’s mana, embracing what is unique about their own cultures. Our whanau, Kaiako and tamariki were invited to wear traditional Indian clothing, providing opportunities for our tamariki to appreciate others cultural attire and to admire the beautiful patterns, intricate details and bright colours which reflect light and illumination – the spirit and central theme of Diwali.
