Early Reading Library Workshop
Kia ora koutou,
Our early reading literacy program has progressed since we last touched based on this amazing program for our Tamariki and Whānau. Melissa, our Kaiako who has been facilitating and organizing the program, has completed her two workshops in-centre with Whānau.
I had fun with the tamariki and their siblings, we sat together for the kai provided by the centre, had fun creating some beautiful artwork to take home and of course, gave Whānau a well-earned break and time to focus on the workshop content knowing their tamariki were enjoying their time in the classroom next door.
There were some beautiful tukana–teina moments as older brothers and sisters supported and helped the younger children in preparing kai and setting up for our creative art activities. The photographs attached are of the final workshop of the three - a visit to the public library with a reading session with the librarian, a tour around the library, a run down for families of the services the library provides, and an opportunity to join the library itself.
It was such a warm welcome from the library team, they had set up a big sign to welcome us in and had a lovely cosy area in the children’s book area all ready for us to hold our reading session. Everyone had the same book (Tamariki and Whānau) supporting the skill of tracking with pictures and word/letter shapes where we were in the story. This provided an opportunity to actively engage in the session for children and a sense of accomplishment for their own learning, proving a true sense that everyone was learning together throughout the workshop.
Next up we headed out on an excursion to our local community library who are very excited to be hosting us and whom we are very excited to be forming a community relationship with. See you back here in a few weeks to read up on how it all went!
