This week, we acknowledged Earth Day through a range of meaningful, hands-on experiences that helped children develop awareness and care for the natural world. Throughout the week, children were actively engaged in different learning opportunities that connected them to sustainability in simple and age-appropriate ways.
Exploring nature outdoors, children spent time in our outdoor environment observing, collecting natural resources and talking about what they could see and hear. These experiences supported curiosity and helped them build a connection with the natural world.
Gardening experiences saw children participating in planting, watering and caring for our garden spaces. They showed great interest in how plants grow and demonstrated responsibility when caring for living things.
Recycling and sorting activities were set up through simple stations where children explored sorting paper, plastic and other materials. This helped them begin to understand the idea of reducing waste and caring for the environment.
Through creative reuse art, children used recycled materials such as boxes, lids and cardboard to create their own artworks. This encouraged imagination while also reinforcing the importance of reusing materials.
During water play and awareness activities, educators gently introduced conversations about using water wisely. Children explored water in play while beginning to understand its value.
Reflecting our practice, this week’s experiences supported children to develop early ideas of kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment). It was wonderful to see their curiosity, care and engagement grow through these intentional learning opportunities.
It was an amazing Earth Day week, filled with curiosity, discovery, creativity and excitement as children explored and cared for their world.
