Here at BestStart Porchester Road, we love to celebrate and learn about different cultures. As our centre continues to grow, it has become more culturally diverse with people from many different countries all around the world. In May, we learnt about the Eid celebration which is celebrated by some of our Muslim whanau. To greet each other people say 'Eid Mubarak', which is the Arabic word for "Blessed Eid".

Eid-ul-Fitr is usually celebrated after the sighting of the crescent moon which signals the end of the holy month of Ramadan. While learning about the Eid celebration, our tamariki were given the opportunity to create their very own crescent moons and stars decorating them for our display wall. We had a cultural dress-up day and one of our very own students came dressed up in her beautiful traditional Afghan attire. On this same day, some of our tamariki were given a chance to try Balaleet which is a sweet dish popular in Arab countries. Delicious!

By celebrating other cultures, this not only gives our tamariki a sense of belonging knowing that they are accepted, but also provides an opportunity to learn about different cultures within our community and make links to the world.
