Exploration at BestStart Kelvin Street

Our tamariki (children) have been having so much fun exploring Pāpatuānuku and their environment through their senses. Te Whāriki that the child learns through active exploration of the environment. But exploration looks different at every age group while still allowing all tamariki to make connections with the world around them. Our kaiako (teachers) have been supporting a sense of exploration through support, guidance and scaffolding. Providing an environment that sparks interest and excitement in our tamariki and allows them to have fun while they push themselves to new limits.

Our Pepi (babies) have been exploring through lots of painting experiences, allowing them to gain control of their bodies while experiencing the activity through sight, sound, touch, smell, and even taste. Our toddlers enjoyed testing out their gross motor ability while exploring their outdoor space, climbing ramps, riding bikes and breathing in fresh air enjoying the sunshine.

Music and movement has allowed our younger tamariki to explore different sounds and feeling rhythm throughout the body. Our older tamariki have enjoyed music and movement in their daily play listening to favourites such as “Let it go” while climbing, running, jumping and dancing. We regularly enjoy spontaneous dance parties and singing along with the musical instruments.

Our Rōpū Tūhuratanga | Discovery Group for our 4.5 - 5 year olds supports our tamariki through their journey into Primary school. This group allows tamariki to explore common numeracy and literacy terms, techniques and processes used at school while supporting social competencies and allowing tamariki to work within a group and support each other. Rōpū Tūhuratanga also utilises our wonderful location to explore our community through the ‘Into the woods’ exploration going and exploring our wonderful Queens Park. This has allowed tamariki to explore off the track, climbing trees and seeing where their imagination takes us.

All of the fabulous weather we have been lucky to have throughout March has been great for outdoor exploration. All of our tamariki have been exploring and gaining control and confidence of their bodies through many different area in their play. The monkey bars have been a favourite in the over 2 year olds playground. Testing strength, balance, determination while taking turns and supporting e hoa | friends.

Our under 2 year olds have been making sense of their worlds and developing problem solving techniques while testing their bodies as they explore their nature space.

So many great exploration opportunities have been experienced throughout this month and so many more yet to occur in the future.
