Exploring children's culture, identity and language

As you all know, in preschool Toru, we have been exploring children's culture, identity and language.

This week we will be learning about Japan. This will be great for children's knowledge and for children to become aware of different cultures and their own culture.

I had a mat time with preschool Toru children. We looked at a few photos of famous Japanese symbols and traditions.

We looked at Japanese national fish: Koi fish

Popular Japanese food: Sushi

Traditional cloths: Kimonos and traditional hats

We also looked at traditional Japanese building structures

we learnt to say hello in Japanese (Konichiwa). We then drew up traditional Kimonos and decorated them using pens, colour pencils, collage material and so on. I printed out a few photos for inspiration

Boys drew men's kimonos, and girls drew women's kimonos. It was great to see the whole class taking part!
