Exploring how Gloop is made

1

In the Fantails room the tamariki local planning is focused on scientific exploration, as part of this we are looking at chemical reactions when mixing multiple resources together. The tamariki really enjoyed diving their hands in to the trough as they worked together to mix the cornflour and water together, this created great opportunity for the kaiako to ask questions about how it felt, was the corn flour dry? was it smooth? is the water cold? as well as modelling how to use our hands to combine the ingredients while using verbal language to discuss through the process and what was occurring as they combined. Once it was all mixed nicely it was time to add the colour, as we continued to mix it around we noticed how the paint created patterns in the white gloop before it fully absorbed the colour in to it. The tamariki really enjoyed grabbing handfuls of the mixture and watching as it dripped through their finger gaps and back in to the trough, this created further opportunity for the kaiako to talk about how gloop is both a solid and liquids depending on how it is being held and how much pressure is being used at the time. Mixing the two different ingredients togther as we did helped to also extend the tamariki gross motor development as we had to use the full arm motion to dive our hands in to this amazingly fun resource as we worked on creating the gloop to play with. The tamariki were having so much fun which we could see by the amount of gloop they ended up covered in and the big smiles that wore across their faces.
