We are super lucky to have an amazing resource close by to BestStart Petone. We have begun regular excursions to the Petone Settlers Museum as part of our Localised curriculum work with the tamariki. Small groups of tamariki and kaiako go for a walk along the Esplanade, stopping for a light bite to eat, before exploring the Museum and looking at the taonga.

Along the way we get to do some sea side gazing, looking out towards the harbour and beyond, talking about what we see, how the harbour came about, using our local legend of Ngake and Whātaitai, and what transport people use to travel in and out of Wellington.

Once at the museum we start off by exploring the what Pito-one once looked like. In this room we see carvings, paintings and artifacts from over 100 years ago. The Māori pa and sailing ship are two of the most popular exhibits, as well as the birds and listening to their songs. These exhibits provide for lots of conversation and questions. The tamariki are learning about where we are and the beginnings of Petone, in a fun, interactive way. Bringing our vision of exploring beyond the horizon to life.
