This morning we spent time in the orchard. There were so many creatures to see and things to explore. We spotted some heihei (chickens) when we first walked in and there was another one lying in their chicken house. As we approached the swan plant we spotted something orange fluttery near us. It was a beautiful pūrerehua (butterfly), with orange and black wings.

A makorori (caterpillar) was relaxing on a stem of the plant and we even saw some tiny tadpoles swimming in a container of water. This was an awesome way to learn about different animals and creatures, and discover new ones that we hadn’t seen before. We got to explore and make sense of the natural environment around us, while also learning how to be responsible for the living world and ways to care for it.

Through these visits to the orchard we will also gain confidence in being around animals, which will lead to nurturing and caring moments. I wonder what new creatures we will find on our next visit!
