Over the recent few months the tamariki in the Koru room at BestStart Welcome Bay have been fully immersed in hands on learning through their senses. Some of these learning experiences have included messy play with sensory coloured rice where the children are open to learning about simple concepts such as scooping, tipping, collecting, dividing and separating amounts. Using open ended equipment to learn and explore with is so much fun. Children enjoy what hair rollers can do on our vortex walls as well as posting ice block sticks.

We have been enjoying water play and the amazing open-ended opportunities it can also bring. The tamariki have had the opportunity to fully immerse their bodies in the water trough and paddling pools, or pour and tip the water over themselves and each other. We have had fun with the hose collecting water in our buckets and scoops and tipping it out and of course lots of splashing!

Art is lots of fun in the Koru room and when toddlers are involved in art it is a tasting experiment… children explore what each colour looks like in their tools of choice as well as all up their arms over their faces and in their mouths!
