Exploring the Wonders of Science: Hands-On Experiments with Little Scientists

At Montessori Johnsonville, we recently had an exciting visit from Rachel of Little Scientists, who brought a burst of energy and curiosity to our classrooms with three hands-on lessons about chemical experiments! The children were captivated as they explored the wonders of science in a fun and interactive way. The first experiment involved inflating a balloon using a simple mixture of baking soda and vinegar. The children watched in awe as the reaction between the two ingredients created carbon dioxide, inflating the balloon without any need for breath! This experiment was a fantastic introduction to chemical reactions, showing the children how everyday household items can create something magical. 

Next, Rachel guided the children through making jiggly slime in a cup. The children eagerly mixed blue water with a special ingredient that caused their concoctions to grow into stretchy, jiggly slime. The sensory experience was a big hit, with the children thoroughly enjoying the tactile nature of the slime and learning about the properties of different materials in the process. The final experiment was all about making foam. Rachel demonstrated how a combination of baking soda, coloured water, dish soap, citric acid can create a foamy explosion. The children were amazed as the foam rapidly expanded, filling their containers and spilling over the sides. This experiment provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss the concept of endothermic reactions, where the reactants absorb heat energy from the surroundings to form the foamy product. 

These experiments were not only engaging but also educational, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific principles through play. The children at Montessori Johnsonville left with a renewed sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around them, eager to explore more scientific wonders in the future!
